alabama
When the Governor signs the bill or as otherwise indicated in the bill.
In-session 6 days (excluding Sundays). A bill becomes law without the Governor’s signature unless the return was prevented by recess. In that case the bill must be returned 2 two days after the Legislature reassembles or the bill becomes law without the Governor’s signature.
Bills received by the Governor less than 5 days before the end of adjournment may be signed into law within 10 days after adjournment. Bills not approved within that time result in a pocket veto.
alaska
90 days after it has been signed by the Governor or permitted to become law without the Governor’s signature, or as otherwise indicated in the bill.
In-session 15 days (excluding Sundays), and 20 days (excluding Sundays if the Legislature has adjourned, or the bill becomes law without the Governor’s signature.
arizona
90 days after session adjournment. If a bill contains an emergency clause it becomes effective immediately upon signature of the Governor.
In-session 5 days (excluding Sundays), and 10 days (excluding Sundays) if the Legislature is adjourned, or the bill becomes a law without the Governor’s signature.
arkansas
90 days after the session adjourns, or as otherwise indicated in the bill.
In-session 5 days (excluding Sundays), and a bill not signed or returned within 5 days of adjournment must be signed or vetoed by the Governor within 20 days (excluding Sundays) after the Legislature has adjourned, or the bill becomes law without the Governor’s signature.
california
Jan. 1, 2026, or as otherwise indicated in the bill.
In session 12 days, or it becomes law without the Governor’s signature, and October 12, 2025, for bills passed by the Legislature on or before September 12 and in the Governor’s possession after Sept. 12, 2025, or it becomes law without the Governor’s signature.
colorado
If the bill has a safety clause, it will take effect when the Governor signs the bill, or as indicated in the bill.
If the Governor allows the bill to become law without his or her signature, and there are at least 10 days left in the legislative session when the Governor receives the bill, the bill will take effect 10 days after the Governor receives the bill.
If the Governor allows the bill to become law without signature and there are fewer than 10 days left in the legislative session when the Governor receives the bill, the bill will take effect 30 days after the Legislature adjourns sine die.
If a bill is enacted without a safety clause but includes an act subject to petition clause and an effective date is not indicated, the effective date is the day following the expiration of the 90-day period after final adjournment of the General Assembly.

If the Legislature comes back into special session, the Governor on the 4th day must deliver a veto message to the chamber of origin or the bill becomes law.
maryland

massachusetts

michigan
As indicated in the bill, 90 days after the end of the legislative session. The legislature may give immediate effect to a bill by a 2/3 vote.
In-session 14 days, or it becomes law without the Governor’s signature. If the Legislature adjourns before the 14 day period, and the Governor does not sign the bill, the bill is pocket vetoed.
minnesota
August 1, or as otherwise indicated in the bill.
In-session 3 days (excluding Sunday), or the bill becomes law without the Governor’s signature. Legislation passed during the last 3 days of the session must be acted upon by the Governor within 14 days of session adjournment or it is pocket vetoed.
mississippi
60 days after passage, or as otherwise indicated in the bill.

missouri
