Nonprofit Formation – An Overview
When a credit union is interested in extending its acts of goodwill to the community, it may be time to consider forming a separate nonprofit entity. The benefits of forming a nonprofit are varied and compelling. Most notably, a nonprofit that qualifies under Section 501(c)(3) can receive tax-deductible donations from the public. A separate nonprofit can also promote a charitable mission more effectively and have a bigger impact.
Planning for Nonprofit Formation
While the reasons for formation may be compelling, the process can feel daunting. There are several required state and federal filings, along with governance and operational considerations. These activities and filings can also assist a sponsoring organization in strategically planning for the nonprofit’s launch and setting it up for success.
Thinking of nonprofit formation for credit unions as a project can help demystify the process and establish a clear timeline, making the activities involved clearer and more achievable for founders. The graphic below depicts the activities and milestones for nonprofit formation along a sample calendar.
How to best understand the graphic:
- Note: Timeline is based on averages but may take as little as 2 months or as long as a year.
- Colored bars are activities and yellow triangles are milestones or filings.
- The activities and milestones are generally in the order necessary to have all inputs needed for future items, but some may be run simultaneously or re-ordered depending on client availability and urgency.
- These items are specifically for a nonprofit organization incorporating in the state of California. Some of the state-related activities and timelines will shift if incorporating in another state.
